Chickens and Hens – Christmas 2014

HOUSTON, TX – To journey forward, you must sometimes take a step back. Chickens and Hens, the latest novel from Canadian writer Nancy-Gail Burns, transports us to a time when the Eagle has landed, the demand for equal rights is building, and free love is in the air. Share the dramatic story of three generations of Irish-American women whose love for each other transcends the epic events of the era in which they each play a part.

Marnie, with a melancholy temperament, relies heavily on her mother, Ellie, for her steady dose of optimism. Melina, the eldest, remains the doer of the family. She will stop at nothing to protect them. When Marnie’s father dies from a massive coronary, they hold onto each other all the tighter.

Asked why she felt compelled to write this book with the late 60s as a backdrop, Ms. Burns said, “It’s the perfect era to represent how change, even when warranted, has difficulty taking hold. The societal changes brewing in the sixties were a perfect analogy for an adolescent child struggling to make changes of her own.”

“I’m very excited to have another excellent work of women’s fiction in our catalog,” said Jason Aydelotte, Chief Gecko at publisher Grey Gecko Press. “It’s important to all of us that we have a very diverse line of titles, for readers of all kinds, and adding a book that had me misty-eyed more than once certainly fits that bill.”

Burns lives in Gloucester, Ontario with her husband and two children. They share their home with two mean-tempered cats and a long-suffering dog. Her first Ryan Delaney novel, Insidious, was published in 2012 and its sequel, Jolted, soon followed. Most recently, Burns’ battle with breast cancer was humorously chronicled in her memoir, Hard Lumps, released by Guernica in the spring of 2014. She is currently working on another novel, The Day of the Dove.
